| ‘Immigration’ requests end to ban on transfer of Bangladeshi domestics |
KUWAIT CITY, Feb 9: Assistant Undersecretary for Citizenships, Passports and Immigration Affairs at the Ministry of Interior Musaed Al-Misha’an has submitted a recommendation to the Undersecretary of the Ministry Major-General Ahmad Al-Rujaib requesting to the lifting ban on transfer of residence for Bangladeshi domestic workers and keeping in tact the ban on new recruits, reports Al-Qabas daily quoting knowledgeable security sources. The sources said the recommendation was submitted after it was discovered the ban has led to increase in violation of residence laws.
Meanwhile, Al-Misha’an has given instructions to take strict measures when issuing visit visas for Iraqis. According to sources the visa applications for Iraqis have to be approved by the Assistant Undersecretary. The sources also said visas will only be issued for parents of applicants. Al-Misha’an has also issued instructions to limit the issue of family visit visas to a maximum of three months unless for humanitarian reasons. Commercial visit visas will be valid for a maximum of two months. Renewal is subject to proof of need of the applicant.
Meanwhile, new instructions have been issued by the authorities to organize the employment of domestic workers after it was discovered Kuwait employs 560,000 domestic workers, reports Al-Watan Arabic daily quoting knowledgeable security sources. According to sources this figure surpasses the number of Kuwaitis in the country. The sources added Kuwaitis and expatriates will not be allowed to sponsor a driver, housemaid or a cook unless the applicant submits a document proving he lives in a house and not an apartment.
In another development, the undersecretary of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Mohammed Al-Kandari has reportedly denied any intention or tendency to suspend the issuance of work permits till 2010, reports Al-Rai daily. He reiterated the ministry’s decision to issue work permits to all departments under the labor sector. Officials according to the paper are putting pressure on the minister Bader Al-Duwaila is to approve the decisions on recruiting departmental heads and unit directors.
The minister was urged to apply demands of the officials equally and speed the discussions on files of nominees for these positions; the sources went on to say. In another development, huge irregularities have been detected on laborers’ transactions data at the Al-Jahra labor department. Committees have been formed to supervise companies, foundations and shops, adding the newly appointed director Ahmad Al-Yassin’s tireless effort to resolving these issues. - Arab Times
