| Ministry to ensure firms taking care of employees |
KUWAIT CITY, Feb 14: The Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor will soon inspect workers’ accommodations to ensure that companies are complying with the law and taking good care of their employees, reports Al-Shahid daily quoting sources. According to sources, the concerned ministry officials will record observations concerning violations, send letters to the management of erring companies, and suspend files of these companies under Code 74.
Sources explained the code stipulates non-renewal or transfer of visas to and from companies proven to have violated the law. Sources said the erring companies can amend their status within one month, indicating these companies cannot cancel Code 74 without fulfilling the requirements for work safety and care for employees. “The erring companies will be removed from Code 74 after obtaining clearance certificates from the appropriate quarters. The accommodation should be conducive and rooms should be enough for the number of persons staying there. A maximum of four or eight employees can reside in a single-room for permanent and temporary accommodations respectively while the entrance, basement, lobby and rooftop should not be used as rooms for the employees,” sources said.

Meanwhile, the new Private Sector Labor Law will protect the rights of workers in the country as it includes stipulations on the appropriate number of work hours, vacations and termination, said Chairman of the American Society for Peace (ASP) – Kuwait branch Eng Fadhil Al-Ali. Al-Ali pointed out the new law contains provisions aimed at correcting the flaws of the existing law as it specifies the need to protect workers from abusive employers, in addition to the minimum age for different employment contracts in accordance with the nature of work and number of work hours. He said the new law also stipulates the need to ensure the safety of workers and the use of environment-friendly equipment.
Urging the Health Affairs and Environment Protection Committees in the Parliament to activate their roles in protecting public health and the environment, Al-Ali emphasized the importance of appointing members of these committees with a vast experience on the field and laying down regulations to maintain their legislative role. - Arab Times
